The oceans cover more than 70% of the planet and generates at least 50% of the planet's oxygen. It supports the majority of the planet's biodiversity, providing sustenance for humans and all other living things on the planet.

World Oceans Day is observed every year on June 8 to remind everyone of the important role the massive water bodies play in the lives of human beings. On this day, we also spread awareness about the dangers facing our oceans and how we can protect them.



Oceans are also called the lungs of the earth and are a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere. It also boosts global economic activity because so many people depend on working in the water to make a living. But because of water pollution and human treatment, the oceans are dying and the aquatic population is suffering and declining. It is very important to work towards saving the oceans.

World Oceans Day 2024: History

The day was first declared at the Global Forum, a parallel event at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro. An event was organised “OCEANS DAY AT GLOBAL FORUM – THE BLUE PLANET” by the Oceans Institute of Canada and supported by the Canadian Government.

The event featured opinion leaders, international experts, and people who could speak for the oceans' role in preserving the Blue Planet. The General Assembly, led by Canada, approved in 2008 to declare June 8 as "World Oceans Day" by the United Nations. (General Assembly Resolution 63/111).

World Oceans Day 2024: Theme

The World Oceans Day theme for 2024 is “Catalysing Action for Our Ocean & Climate.” The goal of the theme is not only a healthy blue planet but also an equitable and sustainable society.

The theme for the first United Nations World Ocean Day in 2009 was ‘Our Oceans, Our Responsibility’.

World Oceans Day 2024: Significance

The goal of the day is to educate the public about the impact of human actions on the ocean. It also creates a global movement of citizens for the ocean and mobilises and unites the people for the sustainable management of the world's oceans.

The ocean generates at least 50% of the planet's oxygen. It supports the majority of the planet's biodiversity and serves as the primary source of protein for over a billion people worldwide. It is also important for our economy, as an estimated 40 million people will be employed in ocean-related industries by 2030.

It is the responsibility of each individual to participate in and contribute to the protection and preservation of our ocean.
