Pakistan notched a seven-wicket win over Canada at the Nassau County International Stadium in New York to bag their first win in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 on Tuesday. The Babar Azam-led side capped off the chase successfully, despite initial hiccups, to bag two points in their kitty.
Mohammad Rizwan hit 52 runs, whereas Babar Azam notched 33 whilst batting at No. 3. Both of them played at a strike rate of 100, with a total of three fours and two maximums being hit. The team finished off the chase successfully with 15 balls to spare. Dilon Heyliger picked a couple of dismissals and Jeremy Gordan got the wicket of Fakhar Zaman, but it was too little and too late for the Canadians.
Aaron Johnson struck a fine 52 before Pakistan pulled things back to restrict Canada to a modest 106 for seven in 20 overs in the first innings.
Johnson was the lone bright spot in Canada's batting department, scoring his runs off 44 balls as the other batters failed to impress.
For Pakistan, who must win the match by a big margin to stay afloat in the tournament, Mohammad Amir (2/13) and Haris Rauf (2/26) picked up two wickets apiece. Amir was named the Player of the Match for his incredible spell that contained runs and got key dismissals as well.
Pakistan, the 2022 finalist, has been rattled by two defeats against the United States and rival India. The U.S. registered a historic win against Pakistan in the Super Over in Dallas last week, and Pakistan couldn’t chase down a run-a-ball target of 120 against India at the same venue on Sunday and lost the game by six runs.
