Samsung Galaxy S24 series launched: Here are all the AI features coming to the devices
Samsung on Wednesday announced the launch of its 2024 flagship, the Galaxy S24 series and as was expected, a big part of the launch was focused on the smartphones’ AI capabilities powered by Google.

Under the multi-year deal, the South Korean firm's flagship series will use in-built Gemini Nano, Google's most efficient large-language model, and get access to Gemini Pro and Imagen 2 text-to-image tech through the cloud. Samsung will be the first Google Cloud partner to do so.

“Google and Samsung have long shared deeply held values around the importance of making technology more helpful and accessible for everyone. We’re thrilled that the Galaxy S24 series is the first smartphone equipped with Gemini Pro and Imagen 2 on Vertex AI,” said Janghyun Yoon, Corporate EVP and Head of Software Office of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics.

Here are all the new AI features that are coming to the Galaxy S24 series.

The Live Translate function enables two-way, real-time voice and text translations of phone calls within the native app, eliminating the need for third-party applications. The Interpreter feature goes further by providing split-screen view translations for live conversations, even without cellular data or Wi-Fi.

Chat Assist enhances messaging and other applications, ensuring that conversational tones are perfect for various contexts. The Samsung Keyboard incorporates AI to translate messages in real-time across 13 languages. On the road, Android Auto automatically summarises incoming messages, suggesting relevant replies and actions for seamless connectivity while driving.

Note Assist in Samsung Notes will help you organise the random tidbits you take down during meetings. This feature includes AI-generated summaries, streamlined note templates, and cover creation for easy note identification. Transcript Assist uses AI and Speech-to-Text technology to transcribe, summarise, and translate voice recordings, even in scenarios with multiple speakers.

The Galaxy S24 series also introduces a gesture-driven Circle to Search feature in collaboration with Google. Users can perform intuitive searches by circling, highlighting, scribbling, or tapping on anything displayed on the screen, providing helpful, high-quality search results without leaving the app. Generative AI-powered overviews offer context and information for certain searches.

The magic of AI is also coming to photo editing. Edit Suggestion uses Galaxy AI to recommend suitable tweaks for each photo, while Generative Edit allows users to fill in parts of an image background with AI. To keep things transparent, anytime Galaxy S24 uses generative AI to amplify an image, a watermark will appear on the image and in metadata.

Google is locked in a race with Microsoft to embed GenAI in everyday applications and devices including smartphones, personal computers and productivity software, as the companies seek new avenues to monetise the tools.

The market share of GenAI smartphones is likely to double in 2024 from 4% in 2023, market research firm Counterpoint Research said last month. Technology market analyst firm Canalys’ forecast also suggests that 5% of smartphones shipped in 2024 will be AI-capable. On top of that, AI-capable smartphones will likely reach 635 million units, 45% of the total smartphone market in 2027.

The Google deal will make Samsung one of the first companies to test Gemini Ultra, the search engine giant's most capable and largest large-language model.

Samsung in the fourth quarter of 2023 lost market share to Apple and Chinese smartphone makers Xiaomi and Transsion, with global shipments falling to 53 million units from nearly 60 million a year earlier, according to analytics firm International Data Corporation.

The Galaxy S24 series will be sold starting January 31.

The base Galaxy S24 will be priced at ₹79,999 and two higher-specification versions, the Galaxy S24+ and S24 Ultra, from ₹99,999 and ₹1,29,999, respectively.
