All about the sacred Vivekananda Rock where the spiritual leader is believed to have attained enlightenment

Located at the southernmost tip of India in Kanyakumari, Swami Vivekananda meditated on the rock in 1892. It was here that the philosopher envisioned a developed and united Bharat. However, the significance of the rock is far older than the Indian monk.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the iconic Vivekananda Rock Memorial site located at the southernmost tip of India in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, just ahead of the final phase of voting in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.



This marks the PM's tradition of undertaking spiritual journeys at the conclusion of election campaigns. The site, known for its spiritual and historical significance, is where spiritual leader Swami Vevekananda meditated in 1892. It was here that the philosopher envisioned a developed and united India.

Almost eight decades later, the site was developed as a memorial dedicated to Swami Vivekananda.

Here's all you need to know about the sacred site:

The memorial consists of two main structures: the Vivekananda Mandapam and the Shripada Mandapam. It stands on one of the two rocks located about 500 meters off the mainland of Vavathurai in the middle of the Laccadive Sea where the three oceans Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea converge.

In the words of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, "Swamiji harmonised the East and the West, religion and science, past and present. And that is why he is great. Our countrymen have gained unprecedented self-respect, self-reliance and self-assertion from his teachings."

And the monument is on these lines. A blend of architectural styles from across India, symbolising a harmonious confluence of diverse cultural influences.

There premises also house a life-sized bronze statue of Swami Vivekananda.

The significance of the rock precedes the Indian monk. According to legend, it was on this rock that Dēvi Kanya Kumari, a manifestation of Hindu Goddess Parvati, prayed to Lord Shiva.
