CEO of $3 trillion AI chip firm doesn’t love every day of the job but works from 5 am till going to bed
Nvidia co-founder and CEO Jensen Huang starts his day at 5 am every day and works seven days a week from the moment he wakes up until he goes to bed.

“When I’m not working, I’m thinking about working. And when I’m working, I’m working. I sit through movies, but I don’t remember them because I’m thinking about work. But my work is not 'working' as in... There’s this problem, and you’re trying to solve this problem,” the 61-year-old AI chipmaker boss told Stripe CEO Patrick Collison in a chat last month.

“Sometimes, it’s just trying to solve a problem, sometimes, imagining the future. You’re fantasising, you’re dreaming,” he added when asked how his work-life balance was.

But, just like any other employee or working professional, the Nvidia CEO does not love every day of his job.

He, however, explained that when one wants to build something great, it’s not easy to do and when they’re doing something that’s not easy, they’re not always enjoying it.

“I don’t love every day of my job. I don’t think every day brings me joy nor does joy have to be the definition of a good day. And every day, I’m not happy. Every year I’m not happy about the company, but I love the company every single second,” he said.

While this conversation between Huang and Collison took place a few weeks back in May, it went viral after Nvidia's stock market value hit $3 trillion for the first time on June 5 as the chipmaker benefited from a race between Wall Street's heavyweights to dominate AI technology.

Huang says that people misunderstand that the best jobs are the ones that bring you happiness all the time.

“I don’t think that’s right. You have to suffer. You have to struggle. You have to endeavour. You have to do those hard things and work through it in order to really appreciate what you’ve done.”

He added that there are no such great things that are easy. “So, by definition, I would say therefore I wish upon you greatness, which by my way of saying it, I wish upon you plenty of pain and suffering.”
