India has urged Russia to return its citizens, who were recruited by the Russian army, after two Indians were recently killed in the ongoing war in Ukraine.
"I want to assure you that the Indian government has taken the matter very seriously," said Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra in a statement to reporters.
"We have told Russia that all Indian nationals in the Russian Army be returned. We have checked how the youth are recruited and how they are sent to Russia. We have told this illegal recruitment has to stop," Kwatra added.
On Tuesday night (June 11), the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that it was coordinating with Russian authorities to repatriate the remains of the two deceased Indians. This brings the total number of Indian casualties in the conflict to four, with two others having died earlier this year.
Indian police in May had busted a racket of human traffickers, arresting four on suspicion of luring young men to Russia with the promise of lucrative jobs or university slots only to force them to fight in the war in Ukraine. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said in March about 35 Indian men were duped in this manner.
