Holding placards and shouting slogans, student associations from various central universities staged a protest outside the Education Ministry at Shastri Bhawan in New Delhi on Monday.
Several student associations from Delhi University, JNU, and the All India Students Association (AISA) participated in the protest.
Protesting students said that they want the government to come up with serious solutions, noting that the NEET UG 2024 results were shocking, with as many as 67 candidates obtaining the All India Rank 1 in the examination.
Raising concerns, students added that the results also show some students secured 718 or 719 marks, which seems impossible because of the marking scheme and pattern of the examination. Additionally, several students from the same center securing 720 marks in the exam, which is also close to impossible, claimed the protesting students.
The student unions shared that this "shows a clear nexus between the government, CEOs of coaching institutes, and students from wealthy backgrounds who can afford expensive coaching classes." Such a trend needs to be stopped as those from economically weaker sections are unable to achieve results based on merit.
Protesting students claimed that coaching centers indirectly bribe the system and give the names of those students who can afford expensive fees as top rankers, thus corrupting the system and leading to suicides.
Discrepancies in NEET results have made students and activists knock on the doors of the Supreme Court.
They have also come out in protest on X, uniting students across India against the NEET results.
Recently, activist Dr. Vivek Pandey wrote on X, "Re-NEET is the only solution to this corruption. Every hardworking student in India deserves fair opportunities."
