Director Aditya Sarpotdar's horror comedy Munjya, which hit screens across the country on Friday, has received a good start at the box office. Produced by Maddock Films, known for films like Stree and Bhediya, the new film from the banner features India's first CGI protagonist. Munjya has minted ₹4.21 crore at the box office on its opening day on June 7.

“The audience made our #Munjya's debut spectacular! Thank you for all the love. #Munjya, a must-watch for families and kids, is in cinemas now! So, book your tickets and watch it at your nearest theatre,” Maddock Films said in a post on the social media site X.

Earlier, the makers, in a press release, said that the film is an eponymous mythical creature from the world of Indian belief and cultural system.

The film features an ensemble cast of Sharvari, Abhay Verma and Mona Singh among others. It also has a cameo appearance by actors Varun Dhawan and Abhishek Banerjee.

Written by Yogesh Chandekar, with additional screenplay and dialogue by Niren Bhatt, the film's music has been composed by Sachin-Jigar, while Amitabh Bhattacharya has written the lyrics.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said the film has received a fantastic start at the box office and "springs the biggest surprise of 2024".

"WHEN NUMBERS DO THE TALKING… ⭐️ No stars to magnetise audiences⭐️ Devoid of popular music ⭐️ Limited pre-release promotions. Clearly, the CGI ‘actor’ has opened BIGGER than most star-studded films," Adarsh wrote on X.

He further noted that the affordable ticket pricing at several cinema chains has helped generate footfall.

“With a solid Day 1 in the kitty, #Munjya needs to cement its status over the weekend [Sat - Sun],” he added.

According to sacnilk.com, Munjya saw an overall Hindi occupancy of 21.49% on Friday.

"So #Munjya takes a pleasant start at the #BoxOffice... smart tkt pricing has made the audiences go for this #HorrorComedy genre... Horror is a theatrical-friendly genre. Feedback is goodish too... hope it performs well at #BO," trade expert Girish Johar said.

Munjya has been produced by Dinesh Vijan and Amar Kaushik.
