Heavy rains, accompanied by thunderstorms, lashed several parts of Mumbai on Sunday night, causing severe waterlogging and traffic snarls in the city. Following the downpour, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the city and red for some areas.
The Met Department announced that the southwest monsoon arrived in the maximum city two days ahead of the schedule due to favourable conditions along the Maharashtra coast.
It also predicted more severe showers with gusty winds of 62–87 kmph over the isolated parts of Mumbai.
The monsoon generally comes around June 11. However, last year it arrived on June 24 due to the 'Biparjoy cyclone’ over the Arabian Sea, according to an IMD official.
“Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and heavy spells of rain with gusty winds reaching 62-87 kmph are very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad during the next 3-4 hours,” the IMD said.
“Mumbai can anticipate thunderstorms accompanied by heavy to very heavy rainfall, with a probability of realisation between 51 and 75%. Neighbouring areas such as Raigad and Ratnagiri stand a higher chance of experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall.
“A red alert has been issued for Sindhudurg and its neighbouring district Kolhapur, emphasising heavy to very heavy rainfall in most areas," the weather agency said.
Most districts in Maharashtra, particularly in the Marathwada and Vidarbha regions, are predicted to get severe rainfall, it said.
The city received 55-77 millimetres of rain in one hour between 11 pm and 12 am on Sunday. The eastern suburbs received 28–40 millimetres of rainfall, while the western suburbs received 48–77 millimetres of rain within the same period, according to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The department issued a yellow alert for the city. However, an orange alert has been issued for Ratnagiri, a red alert for heavy rainfall in Sindhudurg, and a yellow alert for Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, and Raigad on Sunday.
It also advised the people to take necessary precautions when heading out due to the adverse weather conditions.
