Monsoon in Goa: 'Don't be lured by videos'; tourists asked to stay away from unsafe places
The Goa government will soon release a circular urging tourists to avoid unsafe locations, especially as monsoons are expected to arrive in the coastal state in a few days. The state’s Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte announced that his department would soon issue a circular, advising both tourists and locals to stay safe when visiting beaches.

The state tourism minister highlighted that often, individuals are lured to such places after watching videos posted on social media. "Sometimes, an Instagram influencer releases a video about an abandoned quarry which is filled with water. After watching such a video, people go there and jump in the water, without realising the dangers and drown," he was quoted as saying by PTI.

The tourism department intends to raise awareness among tourists and residents about the importance of assessing the safety of locations before visiting them, Khaunte added.

Despite Chief Minister Pramod Sawant's appeals to refrain from swimming or venturing into deep waters, incidents of drowning persist in the coastal state, Khaunte said.

With the monsoon approaching, district collectors in North and South Goa issued circulars prohibiting swimming in waterfalls, abandoned quarries, rivers, and other water bodies. The district administration highlighted that non-compliance with the directives would constitute to violation of Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to disobedience posing a threat to human life, health, or safety.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday (May 30) that Southwest monsoon made an early onset over Kerala and northeastern region, setting the stage for the four-month rainy season, which is crucial for India's economy.

Weather scientists said cyclone Remal, which ripped through West Bengal and Bangladesh on Sunday, had pulled the monsoonal flow to the Bay of Bengal, which could be one of the reasons for early onset over the northeast.

On May 15, the weather office had announced the onset of monsoon over Kerala by May 31. The simultaneous onset of monsoon over Kerala and the northeast is quite rare and has happened on four occasions earlier.

"Southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala and advanced into most parts of northeast India today, the 30th May, 2024," the India Meteorological Department said.

The weather office said southwest monsoon has also covered most parts of the northeast region including entire Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and parts of Tripura, Meghalaya, and Assam.

Kerala has been receiving heavy rains for the past few days resulting in a surplus May rainfall, the weather office data showed.
