Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mohan Charan Majhi, a four-time MLA having his roots in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), is all set to take oath as the next Chief Minister of
Odisha on Wednesday, June 12.
Majhi will be the saffron party's first chief minister in the state, marking the end of the 24-year rule of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Naveen Patnaik.
Besides him, the party has picked two Deputy Chief Ministers - KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida, who will serve as the maiden woman Deputy CM of the state.
The oath-taking ceremony will take place at 4:55 pm at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders will attend the ceremony.
In the recently concluded
Odisha Assembly elections 2024, the BJP emerged as the single largest party in the state, winning 78 out of 147 seats in the state Assembly.
The BJD, meanwhile, was restricted to 51 seats, while Congress bagged 14 and one seat went to CPI(M). Independent candidates bagged the remaining three seats.
Who is Mohan Charan Majhi?
A member of the Santali tribe, Majhi hails from Raikala village in Odisha's mineral-rich Keonjhar district.
He started as the sarpanch of the Raikala panchayat and gradually ascended the political ladder. Besides politics, he also worked at Saraswati Sishu Mandir, a school affiliated with the RSS.
As per his election affidavit, Majhi passed higher secondary from Jhumpura High School in 1987 and completed his Class 12th from Anadapur College in 1990. He has a BA degree from Chandra Sekhar College and an LLB degree from the Dhenkanal Law College.
In a political career spanning over two decades, Majhi was first elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly in 2000 and again in 2004. However, he faced a defeat during the 2009 and 2014 elections -- which took place after the BJP-BJD alliance broke down.
During his career, Majhi has served as the Chief Whip of the
BJP in the 16th Odisha Legislative Assembly, besides being the national secretary of the BJP ST Morcha.
In the 2024 Assembly elections, Mohan Majhi defeated BJD's Mina Majhi by 11,577 votes from the Keonjhar seat.
Union Minister Rajnath Singh, one of the party observers to select the new Chief Minister, has described Majhi as a “young and dynamic party karyakarta” who is all set to take the state forward on the road to progress and prosperity.
