The Karnataka government has banned the release of the Annu Kapoor-starrer 'Hamare Baarah' in the state for two weeks. The state government alleged that the release could lead to communal tension, and announced the decision in accordance with Sections 15(1) and 15(5) of the Karnataka Cinema Regulations Act 1964, ANI reported.
The ban also applies to the screening of the film's trailer on media platforms.
The decision came after taking into consideration requests from several minority organisations and delegations. Earlier, it was alleged that the film has been picturised in a “provocative and insulting manner”.
Exploring the theme of overpopulation, the film has recently garnered attention for its narrative. Besides Annu Kapoor, it also features Manoj Joshi and Paritosh Tripathi among others. The film has been directed by Kamal Chandra.
This comes after a vacation bench of the Bombay High Court on Thursday lifted the injunction on the release of 'Hamare Baarah' on Friday, June 7. The court's decision came with instructions to form a committee of three members, including at least one Muslim member, who will watch the film and provide their report to the court.
Unless the court alters its decision, 'Hamare Baarah' is permitted to be showcased in cinemas. However, the High Court took note of the removal of certain dialogues and the film's certification process.
Further, it has emphasised the need for the committee to focus solely on the film's theme as well as the claims made in the petition.
It specified that any objections raised by the petitioner would be further considered by the court on Friday, in order to ensure a fair and balanced decision-making process, the news agency reported.
The High Court's decision gave a big relief to the makers as they faced uncertainty after the earlier stay imposed by the High Court till June 14, just two days before the film's release.
According to reports, the film narrates the story of a man named Manzoor Ali Khan Sanjari, who after losing his first wife during childbirth remains adamant about having more children with his second wife — currently pregnant with her sixth.
