Ace filmmaker Karan Johar has approached the Bombay High Court against the makers of Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar, raising an objection to his name being unlawfully used in the forthcoming film's title.
In his plea, the 52-year-old director-producer has sought a permanent injunction and restraining order against the producers of the film -- IndiaPride Advisory and Sanjay Singh as well as writer-director Bablu Singh -- from using his name in the movie's title.
The matter was mentioned before the single-judge bench of Justice RI Chagla on Wednesday. The High Court stated that the pea will be heard on Thursday, June 13.
Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar is slated for release on Friday, June 14.
Karan Johar, in his petition, stated that he had no relation with the film or its makers while maintaining that they were unlawfully using his name in the title.
The film title directly refers to him and thereby violates his personality rights and right to publicity and privacy.
Further, Johar claimed that by using his 'brand name' unauthorisedly, the makers of the film were utilising his goodwill and reputation without obtaining his prior permission.
He noted that the unauthorised use of his name in the film's title was causing irreparable loss and damage to his reputation.
“These trailers and posters have caused and are continuing to cause irreparable loss and damage to the goodwill and reputation of the plaintiff,” the plea stated.
“Further, such release of the said film with the title containing his brand name 'Karan Johar' together or in parts, will cause irreparable loss and damage to the goodwill and reputation, which he has gained after investing huge amounts of time, effort and money,” it added.
Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar features Aman Singh Deep, Parthaa Akherkar, Monika Rathore, Amit Lekhwani and Jiten Mukhi among others. The film is expected to be released on Friday.
