The Centre, on Thursday, reportedly informed the Supreme Court of its decision to annul the scorecards of 1,563 NEET-UG 2024 candidates who had received grace marks. These students will be allowed to retake the exam.
According to legal news outlet Live Law, the affected candidates will be notified of their actual scores, excluding the grace marks, and can choose to sit for a re-examination. For those opting out of the re-test, their results will be based on the original examination held on May 5.
The Supreme Court commenced hearings on Thursday, addressing several petitions, including one from Alakh Pandey, CEO of EdTech firm Physics Wallah, related to the NEET-UG 2024 admissions for MBBS, BDS, and other courses.
According to the Supreme Court's updated schedule, a vacation bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta will review grievances regarding the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024.
Pandey has petitioned the court, challenging the alleged arbitrary award of grace marks by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to over 1,500 candidates.
He has requested the establishment of an expert panel under the court’s supervision to investigate the examination process and results of NEET-UG 2024. The test was conducted by the NTA on May 5 across 4,750 centres, with approximately 24 lakh candidates.
Results, initially expected on June 14, were released early on June 4 due to expedited answer sheet evaluations.
The controversy, including allegations of a question paper leak and the awarding of grace marks, has sparked protests and legal actions in multiple high courts and the Supreme Court.
Suspicion was further fueled by 67 students scoring a perfect 720, an unprecedented occurrence in NTA's history, with six students from a single centre in Faridabad, Haryana.
Protests erupted in Delhi on June 10, with students demanding an investigation into the alleged irregularities. The attribution of top ranks to grace marks has been a focal point of these grievances.
