In 1528, Mir Baqi, the commander of Mughal emperor Babur’s army, built the Babri Masjid on the same site where a Hindu shrine existed, according to the Archeological Survey of India.

The first recorded incident of religious violence resulted in a fence within the site. The inner court was to be used by the Muslims and the outer court by the Hindus.
1885
Mahant Raghubir Das files a plea in the Faizabad district court seeking permission to build the Ramchabutra (a canopy for the Hindus) outside the mosque. However, the plea was rejected.
1949
Idols of Ram Lalla (Rama in child form) are found inside the mosque. Gopal Singh Visharad files a petition before a Faizabad court seeking worshipping rights.

The government calls the site a disputed area and locks the gates.
1961
The Sunni Central Waqf Board files a suit in Faizabad civil court declaring Babri Mosque as property of the board.
1984
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad spearheads a movement to 'liberate' the birth-place of Lord Ram and build a temple.
