Hollywood studio Lionsgate revealed it is developing a new "Hunger Games" movie, adapted from Suzanne Collins' forthcoming novel. The news follows Collins' announcement on Thursday, June 6, of her fifth book in the renowned dystopian series, titled "Sunrise on the Reaping," which is set for release next year.
Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, confirmed that the studio is gearing up to bring the latest instalment to the big screen, with a planned theatrical release on November 20, 2026. Filmmaker Francis Lawrence, who directed the previous four films in the franchise, is expected to return to helm the new project. The film will be produced under Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson’s Color Force banner.
The "Hunger Games" series, known for its gripping themes of survival, rebellion, and the consequences of power, began with Collins' initial novel, "The Hunger Games." This was followed by sequels "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay."

Lionsgate's film adaptations, starting with "The Hunger Games" in 2012 starring Jennifer Lawrence, captivated audiences worldwide and were followed by three successful sequels: "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1," and "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2."
Set in the dystopian nation of Panem, the series portrays a society where the wealthy Capitol rules over 13 districts in varying states of poverty. Annually, children from the first 12 districts are chosen via lottery to participate in a brutal, televised death match known as The Hunger Games.
In 2020, Collins expanded the series with a prequel, "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," which Lionsgate adapted into a film released in 2023, featuring Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler in lead roles.
"Sunrise on the Reaping" is set 24 years before the original trilogy's events, during the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. This new novel promises to delve deeper into the world of Panem, providing fans with a fresh yet familiar storyline.
