A recent study by HP has revealed that an overwhelming 89% of Indians view technology as a crucial factor in integrating traditionally excluded populations into the economy. This figure is notably higher than the global average of 76%, underscoring India's strong belief in the transformative power of technology, HP said in a press release.
HP unveiled the findings alongside its Sustainable Impact Report 2023, highlighting its progress towards ambitious environmental and social goals. The report details HP's efforts to enhance technology access, build skills, and leverage AI for positive societal impact.
HP commissioned Oxford Economics to conduct independent research on this topic. The survey, conducted from October to November 2023, included 1,036 business leaders and government officials from 10 countries: the US, France, India, the UK, Germany, Japan, China, Mexico, Brazil, and Canada.
HP to introduce free AI training in India
To further its mission, HP plans to integrate free AI training into its Digital Business Skills HP LIFE programme worldwide, including in India. This initiative aligns with the belief of 76% of global leaders that AI can drive progress towards sustainability and social impact goals. Additionally, HP is set to launch next-gen AI PCs in India to enhance work and creative processes.

Michele Malejki, HP Global Head of Social Impact and Director of the HP Foundation, emphasised equipping individuals with the necessary skills to utilise technology effectively. "Everyone deserves an opportunity to access the tools needed to thrive in the digital economy," Malejki stated. "Technology can be a great equaliser and a powerful tool to drive progress."
Expanding skills-building programmes
HP aims to enrol 2.75 million users in the HP LIFE free skills-building programme by 2030. Since its inception in 2016, the programme has enrolled over 1.2 million users globally, with India contributing the highest number of new users. HP said this highlights the urgent need for skills development in the country.
Accelerating digital equity
HP's Sustainable Impact Report announced that the company has accelerated digital equity for over 45 million people since 2021, nearly a third of its goal to reach 150 million by 2030. This progress, the report said, stems from innovative partnerships and community-focused solutions targeting those most affected by the digital divide.
Key initiatives
HP World on Wheels (WoW) Programme: In 2023, the WoW programme benefited 6.13 lakh individuals, nearly 55% being women and girls. These solar-powered mobile learning labs have reached 1,200 villages across 14 Indian states, impacting over 1.7 million people since 2020.
HP Continued Learning Access Programme (CLAP): This initiative reached approximately 1.58 lakh students in 2023, ensuring continued learning opportunities during disruptions caused by natural disasters or pandemics.
HP Accessible Learning for All (ALFA): In 2023, the ALFA programme provided access to digital classrooms for 5.05 lakh students across India.
