Prime Minister Modi in his third term, has included Nirmala Sitharaman in his Cabinet, once again expressing confidence in her. Two-time Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has already presented six budgets, starting from the full budget of 2019, fresh after the then NDA government took charge.
Sitharaman has been finance minister for five years. The six budgets she has presented were for years 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and the interim budget for 2024.
In the past, she was also minister of state, finance, albeit for a brief period of 6–7 months.
The 64-year-old minister took the baton from Arun Jaitley in 2019, becoming the country's first woman to get charge of the finance portfolio for a full term. Among the major reforms initiated by her as the finance minister was cutting the base corporate tax to 22% — down from 30%.
Steering the economy out of the COVID pandemic challenges, she announced a key special economic package worth ₹20 lakh crore — which amounted to roughly 10% of India's GDP.
She is likely to continue on the path of fiscal consolidation, with similar policies that brought down the fiscal deficit from 5.8% to 5.6%.
