Meteorological department predicts widespread rain as southwest monsoon advances across India

The monsoon is expected to advance further into more areas of the central Arabian Sea, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and parts of the Bay of Bengal in the next 2-3 days.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday, 2nd June, said that the Southwest monsoon has now covered more parts of the central Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, and Andhra Pradesh. It has also reached the Southwest, Central, and Northwest Bay of Bengal.

The monsoon is expected to advance further into more areas of the central Arabian Sea, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and parts of the Bay of Bengal in the next 2-3 days.

In Northeast India, IMD has said, strong winds from the Bay of Bengal are likely to bring rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the next week. Heavy rain is expected in Assam and Meghalaya from 2nd-4th June, continuing through 5th-6th June. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are also likely to witness heavy rain from 3rd-6th June.

In Southern India, widespread rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are forecast in Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Karnataka. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Rayalaseema will have scattered rain over the next week. Very heavy rain is expected in Kerala and Mahe on 2nd June, with Tamil Nadu seeing heavy rain on 2nd and 5th June.

A Western Disturbance and cyclonic circulations will bring light rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds to Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand over the next five days. Dust storms are expected in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan on 2nd June.

Despite the monsoon's progress, heat wave conditions are forecasted to continue in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Odisha, and Jharkhand on various days from 2nd-6th June. Temperatures have reached 45-46°C in some areas.

Heavy rain has already been recorded in parts of Kerala, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. This includes 14 cm in parts of Kerala and 10 cm in parts of Tamil Nadu. Wind speeds reached up to 85 km/h in Chittaurgarh, Rajasthan, and 78 km/h in Simdega, Jharkhand.
