Severe heatwave in parts of Uttar Pradesh, heavy showers in these states: IMD

Light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms is expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the next seven days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday said that conditions are favourable for the monsoon to further advance into more parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai as well as Telangana and parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh over the next three to four days.

Moreover, the weather department predicted further advance of the southwest monsoon into more parts of the central Arabian Sea, south Chhattisgarh and South Odisha along with the remaining parts of Westcentral and Northwest Bay of Bengal in the next couple of days.

Rainfall

The IMD, in its daily bulletin, said light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in the range of 30-40 kmph is expected over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the next one week.

It has predicted isolated heavy rainfall over parts of West Bengal and Sikkim between June 8-11, Assam and Meghalaya from June 8 to 11, Arunachal Pradesh from June 9 to 11 and Nagaland on June 10 and 11. Very heavy rainfall is also likely in some areas of Assam and Meghalaya on June 10 and 11.

“A shear zone runs roughly along 16°N in lower and middle tropospheric levels. A cyclonic circulation lies over south Telangana and neighbourhood and a trough runs from south Maharashtra to southeast Arabian off south Kerala in lower tropospheric levels,” IMD said.

Under their influence, it said that light to moderate rainfall is expected over Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next four days.

Heatwave

On Friday, June 7, the maximum temperatures were reported in the range of 43-46 degrees Celsius in isolated pockets of south Haryana, Delhi, south Uttar Pradesh, southeast Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and southwest Bihar, the weather department noted, adding that these were above normal by 2-4 degrees Celsius.

It further predicted heatwave conditions in isolated pockets of northeast Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand during June 8-11, Bihar on June 9-10 and Odisha, Punjab and Haryana during June 9-11.

“Heatwave to severe heat wave conditions are very likely in some parts of Uttar Pradesh during June 8-11,” it added.

Moreover, hot and humid weather is expected to prevail over isolated pockets of Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal on Saturday.
