Terrible tourists: Spanish beach town to levy over ₹1.35 lakh fine for indecent behaviour

Bachelor and bachelorette partygoers who flaunt sex dolls in public or wear skimpy outfits away from the beach will be fined for their action in the Spanish coastal town of Platja d’Aro, located on Spain's Costa Brava.

The Spanish resort town of Platja d’Aro, located on Spain's Costa Brava, is cracking down on indecent behaviour by tourists who celebrate bachelor and bachelorette parties, levying fines of up to $811 (₹66,000)

The fines will be imposed on those flaunting inappropriate attire in public. According to CNN, those individuals who wear genitalia-themed costumes or carry sex dolls in public, will be fined, a city hall spokesperson said.

Subsequently, fines could reach up to $1,620 (₹1.35 lakh) for disruptive behaviour, although specific infractions were not outlined. The new regulations, will be implemented by end-June and will include banning shirtless outings and scanty attire away from the beach.

With a population of 12,500, which rises to 150,000 visitors per day during summer weekends, the town's administration is ramping up enforcement efforts, including hiring more police officers. Offenders will be issued fines, but they can contest them and won't be required to pay immediately.

The move by the authorities followed a recent incident during a bachelor party where the groom was tied to a lamppost while revellers caused disturbances late into the night, disrupting locals.

To manage the influx of tourists, especially during peak wedding and party season, the town will augment its police force with an additional officers.

Meanwhile, in another resort town thousands of residents on the Balearic Islands in Spain rallied against mass tourism, holding placards that read: "SOS Residents" and "Enough Mass Tourism".

Demonstrating through Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the largest Balearic Island, protestors highlighted their anger against over tourism. The Spanish National police spokesperson estimated around 10,000 participated in the protests, PTI reported.

"We want the authorities to stop people who have not lived here more than five years from buying properties and to put more controls on holiday accommodation," a protestor representing the collective behind the Palma de Mallorca protest said.

A real estate agent stressed that over half of rental properties catered to holiday rents, rendering them unaffordable for locals. "We want less mass tourism and more sustainable tourism," he highlighted.
