Apple has unveiled Apple Intelligence, a personal intelligence system integrated into iPhone, iPad, and Mac, designed to enhance productivity, communication, and privacy. Announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, Apple Intelligence leverages generative models with personal context to deliver intuitive and powerful experiences across Apple's ecosystem.
Transformative Writing Tools Apple Intelligence introduces new Writing Tools that assist users in finding the right words across various applications. These tools can summarise lectures, condense lengthy group threads, and prioritise notifications to minimise distractions. Users can rewrite, proofread, and summarise text with a tap, enhancing communication efficiency.
The Smart Reply feature in Mail drafts email responses by identifying questions and offering relevant suggestions. The Reduce Interruptions feature also intelligently filters notifications, ensuring users receive only the most urgent alerts.
Visual Expression with Image Playground Apple Intelligence also enables users to create fun, original images and Genmoji personalised to their preferences. The Image Playground app allows users to experiment with different styles, such as animation, illustration, and sketch. The Image Wand feature in Notes transforms rough sketches into related images, enhancing the visual appeal of notes.
New capabilities enhance the Photos app, including creating custom memory movies based on user descriptions and the Clean Up tool, which removes distracting objects from photos without altering the subject.
Enhanced Siri Capabilities Siri, powered by Apple Intelligence, becomes more natural, contextually aware, and integrated into the system experience. Users can type to Siri, access extensive product knowledge, and perform actions across apps seamlessly. Siri's enhanced language understanding and personal context awareness enable it to assist users more effectively, from adding new addresses to contact cards to finding specific information stored on the device.
Privacy-Centric Design Apple Intelligence is built with privacy at its core. On-device processing ensures that personal information remains secure. At the same time, Private Cloud Compute allows for complex requests to be handled on Apple silicon servers without storing user data. This approach sets a new standard for privacy in AI, ensuring that data is used solely for user requests and is never stored or accessible to Apple.
Integration with ChatGPT Apple Intelligence integrates ChatGPT from OpenAI into Siri and Writing Tools, providing users with additional expertise and capabilities. Users can control when ChatGPT is used and are prompted before sharing any information. This integration allows seamless access to ChatGPT's advanced features without needing separate tools or accounts.
Availability Apple Intelligence will be available in beta later this year on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and devices with M1 or later chips as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. Over the next year, additional features, languages, and platforms will be introduced.
