Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao-starrer
Mr & Mrs Mahi, which hit screens worldwide on Friday, May 31, has received positive reviews and exceeded expectations at the box office on the first day of its release.
According to the makers, the film has minted ₹6.85 crore on the first day at the box office in India.
The sports drama film has been helmed by Sharan Sharma, who earlier directed Janhvi Kapoor’s
Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl in 2020. The film tells the story of a couple Mahendra and Mahima, who both share the same nickname, Mahi, and are fans of former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Srikanth, Rajkummar Rao’s last film, earned ₹2.25 crore on its opening day. It is still running in cinemas.
The release of
Mr & Mrs Mahi coincided with
Cinema Lovers’ Day on May 31 as part of which movie-goers had the opportunity to watch the film for ₹99 per ticket.
The film received an overall Hindi occupancy of 56.15% Hindi occupancy, with most of the viewers catching the night shows, according to sacnilk.com.
While the morning and afternoon shows saw 24.79% and 50.46% occupancy, it later increased to 65.39% in the evening shows and reached 83.95% towards the night shows.
The film saw an overall occupancy of 55.50% across 621 shows in Mumbai, 61.50% in 789 shows across Delhi-NCR and 63.25% (223 shows) in Bengaluru.

He added that the film is now required to maintain the momentum and pack a strong score over the weekend on Saturday and Sunday as it will be back to regular ticket rates on these days. “The audience feedback is extremely positive, it now needs to convert into footfalls,” he stated.
Trade analyst Sumit Kadel noted that while Rajkummar Rao being a seasoned actor performs extremely well in the film, Janhvi Kapoor “surprises the audience with her performance!”
“Holding her own in front of such a good actor, especially early in her career is impressive. Janhvi simply dazzles,” he wrote on X.
Mr & Mrs Mahi released alongside Abhinay Deo's thriller film
Savi, which features Anil Kapoor, Divya Khossla and Harshvardhan Rane among others. The film has collected ₹2.05 crore on its opening day.
