The water crisis in Delhi has escalated into a political battle between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and Haryana. Accusations fly as the AAP blames the BJP-led Haryana government for playing negative politics and obstructing the water supply from the Yamuna, leading to a severe shortage in the national capital.
Here's what we know so far:
- The AAP staged a protest on June 10 at the Haryana Bhawan in Delhi, accusing the neighboring state of withholding Delhi's share of the Yamuna's water. Additional protests were held at BJP headquarters, Mandi House, and Connaught Place.
- AAP's chief national spokesperson, Priyanka Kakkar, claimed that 137 cusecs of additional water ordered by the Supreme Court to be released by Himachal Pradesh has yet to reach Delhi.
- The AAP has accused the Haryana government of stopping Delhi's water from Himachal Pradesh. The neighbouring state is also accused of reducing the national capital's share of 1,050 cusecs, according to an agreement between the two states, by 200 cusecs.
- The AAP has hit out at Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena, saying he could have negotiated and asked Haryana to release the water but he did not.
- The LG met Delhi ministers Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj and assured them that he will take up the water supply matter with the Haryana government. He advised them not to indulge in "blame game" and resolve issues amicably.
- The LG said if the wastage of the water to the tune of 25% in Munak canal due to lack of repairs and theft, and 54% unaccounted water which includes 40% leakages and theft in the city itself are plugged, the water crisis in Delhi will automatically be resolved to a large extent.
- On the other, the BJP accused the AAP leaders of lying on the water shortage issue. BJP's Delhi unit chief Virendra Sachdeva blamed the AAP for mismanagement which has resulted in water theft and wastage.
