In a major development, a Maldivian parliamentary committee has decided to review three agreements with India signed during former president Ibrahim Solih's tenure.

The proposal was made by Ahmed Azaan, a parliamentarian from President Mohamed Muizzu's People's National Congress (PNC) party. "Today, the National Security Services Committee of the parliament has decided to conduct a parliamentary inquiry to investigate actions undertaken by President Ibrahim Solih's administration that undermined the sovereignty and independence of the Maldives," Azaan posted on X.

The development coincided with Muizzu's visit to India for the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister for the third term.

The pacts to be probed include a 2019 agreement with India on conducting hydrographic surveys, an agreement to develop the Uthuru Thila Falhu naval base, and an agreement whereby India gifted a Dornier aircraft to the Maldives, media reports said.

The Muizzu government has already decided to scrap the agreement on hydrographic surveys.

A parliamentary panel subsequently set up a sub-committee to probe the matter. The four-member sub-committee include Ahmed Azaan and fellow parliamentarians Ahmed Nazim, Abdul Gafoor Musa and Abdul Hannan Aboobakaru.
