The International Day of Action for Women’s Health is observed on May 28 every year globally to amplify demands for sexual and reproductive health as well as rights and justice for women.
This day serves as a platform to promote gender equality, women empowerment, the right to education and the right to privacy.
Several cultural events and campaigns are organised to spread the message of gender equality and women's safety.
On this day, let's take a look at some of the common
health issues that women worldwide should not ignore:
- Menstrual Irregularities
Menstrual irregularities are one of the most common
female health issues today. Normally, the menstrual cycle appears once every 21 to 35 days.
Changes in blood flow may cause such irregularities. Due to this, women often experience stomach cramps and
several other health issues. It is always advised to consult doctors as menstrual irregularities can be caused due to multiple serious health issues.
- Maternity Issues
Maternity care in India is a long-standing problem. In our country, thousands of women lose their lives due to many serious maternity issues that remain untreated. These issues mainly emerge in rural areas of the country where there is a lack of proper medical facilities.
These issues also remain unheard of due to a lack of education about maternity health. Pregnant women should always use clean and properly maintained washrooms to avoid infections and other related diseases.
- Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD)
Around 5 to 10% of women globally are affected by PCOD, a hormonal disorder that mainly affects women aged between 12 and 45 years.
Around 9 to 22% of the women are affected by PCOD in India. This hormonal disorder generally impacts the menstrual cycle resulting in various difficulties.
This highly affects their ability to conceive. If PCOD goes unaddressed, it can lead to several other health complications like diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, etc.
- Urinary tract infections
These are bacterial infections that affect a woman’s urinary tract. UTIs can affect any organ of the urinary system including kidneys, bladder, ureters and urethra.
UTIs are one of the most
common health issues faced by women. It is important to consult a doctor and take the right medication for proper treatment.
- Anxiety and depression
Several people across the globe, including both men and women, face certain mental health issues. This can affect your daily routine and productivity.
Post-pregnancy depression is also a common problem in India. These mental issues can lead to several other health conditions like insomnia, suicidal attitude, loss of appetite and many more.
