A special eight-day session of the Indian Parliament is scheduled to begin on June 24, during which the election of the new Lok Sabha Speaker is expected to take place on June 26, according to sources cited by India Today.
The initial two days of the session, June 24 and 25, will be dedicated to the swearing-in of the newly-elected members of Parliament (MPs). Following these formalities, the focus will shift to the election of the Lok Sabha Speaker, a key position within the parliamentary framework.
One of the primary objectives for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during this session is to secure their candidate as the new Speaker. The role has gained significant attention as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), of which BJP is a major component, is set to propose their nominee for the position, India Today reported.
Notably, coalition partners such as the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) are also expressing interest in the prestigious chair.
In the recent Lok Sabha election results, the BJP secured 240 seats, falling short of the 272-seat majority mark. This outcome has sparked concerns about potential internal dissent within the party and the broader NDA coalition.
In this context, the role of the Lok Sabha Speaker, who is pivotal in enforcing the anti-defection law, becomes crucial in maintaining party discipline and stability.
