Saurabh Netravalkar, 32, is representing the United States of America (USA) in the current ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. The left-arm medium pacer has impressed the cricketing fraternity with his bowling smarts and he used to play for India in the junior levels.
He had made his List A debut for Mumbai against Baroda in 2014, and has done an engineering degree from Cornell University in New York. He works as a Principle Member of the Technical Staff at Oracle in San Mateo, California, and has been associated with the company ever since 2016. Netrawalkar is in fact on leave from the IT giant to participate in the T20 World Cup!
Playing Stats
Netrawalkar debuted for the USA in international cricket in both ODIs and T20Is in 2019. He has played 29 T20Is for them, picking as many wickets at an economy rate of 6.62. His bowling strike rate is an impressive 18.8 and he averages 20.79 with the ball. With one five-wicket haul to his name, Netrwalkar has caught the eye of world cricket with his skilful pace bowling.
In ODIs, Netrawalkar played 48 matches and notched 73 dismissals with an impeccable economy rate of 3.73. He has picked one four-wicket haul and two five-wicket hauls in his 50-overs career. Netrawalkar's bowling average and strike rate are at a strong 22.27 and 33.6.
Domestic Record
In the List A game, he has turned up in 80 games, taking 117 wickets and delivering an economy rate and strike rate of 4.18 and 35.5 with the ball. He has picked two four-wicket and one five-wicket haul each, starring due to his ability to keep things tight with the ball and also pluck timely wickets at crucial junctures of the match.
"Many of my former team-mates are now playing for India. I got into the [Mumbai] squad too. But I couldn’t cement my place or even get into the Indian Premier League (IPL). I was in two minds. Should I pursue cricket or concentrate on studies? It was a difficult decision. San Francisco still doesn’t have proper pitches. They play on an artificial pitch that’s more like a synthetic mat. But they had soil pitches in a park in Los Angeles - it’s like the Maidan in Mumbai," Netrawalkar recently said in an interview to the BBC.
Will he bag an IPL contract?
In a recent Cricbuzz show, ex-Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team director Joy Bhattacharya explained that Netrawalkar was in the radar of the current Indian Premier League (IPL) champions way back in 2009 itself. He did end up coming for the trials but was not picked by any team. However, fortunes might just change for the star bowler as the display of his prowess at the international stage shows that he might just be ready to don the cap of an IPL team as the mega auction approaches later this year.
